What is UV
printing?

UV printing is a digital technique that uses ultraviolet light to instantly cure ink the moment it lands on a surface — bonding it directly to the product.

The result is vivid, full-colour, scratch-resistant decoration that traditional printing simply can't match. Below we walk through how it works.

THE PROCESS

How UV printing works

A piezo printhead deposits microscopic droplets of UV-curable ink onto the bottle. As the ink lands, a UV-LED lamp follows immediately behind, exposing the ink to ultraviolet light.

Under that UV light, a photochemical reaction called photopolymerisation occurs — the small molecules in the ink instantly bond into long chains, hardening into a solid layer of colour bonded to the surface.

UV printing on stainless steel bottles

Uviqs uses UV rotary printing — the bottle slowly rotates while the printhead and UV-LED lamp move along its length, treating every part of the cylindrical surface with the same precision.

Every Uviqs bottle is printed with a white ink base layer first, regardless of the bottle colour underneath. The white acts like primer on canvas: it makes sure your design looks identical on a black bottle as it does on a peach one.

Looking for extra durability or a premium finish? In the Bottle Designer, you can optionally add a varnish (gloss) layer. This transparent top layer not only transforms the print from a matte finish to a glossy one, but also provides an additional protective coating. It is especially recommended for bottles that see intensive daily use, helping to keep the print looking vibrant and scratch-resistant for even longer.

Is UV printing sustainable?

UV printing has a noticeably lower environmental impact than solvent-based methods. UV inks are VOC-free — no volatile organic compounds are released into the air during curing.

Modern LED-UV lamps consume far less energy than older systems, and digital curing means less ink wasted on setup. A long-life object decorated with a long-life print.

How should I care for a UV-printed bottle?

We recommend hand washing with a soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid the dishwasher, abrasive scourers, and harsh chemicals — these can shorten the life of the print. With everyday care, a UV-printed bottle stays sharp and vivid for years.

What surfaces can UV printing be used on?

UV printing works on a wide range of materials: stainless steel, aluminium, glass, ceramic, wood, leather, acrylic, and many plastics. At Uviqs we focus on stainless steel bottles, where UV ink bonds particularly well thanks to the smooth, non-porous surface.

What file formats work best for UV printing?

Vector files (PDF, SVG, AI) give the sharpest result, especially for logos and text, because they can be scaled without quality loss. High-resolution raster files (PNG, JPG at 300 dpi or higher at print size) also work well for photographic artwork.

Can UV printing reproduce metallic or fluorescent colours?

UV printers use CMYK plus white ink, so true metallic finishes (gold, silver foil) and fluorescent inks aren't possible in the standard process. However, you can simulate metallic effects with shading and gradients, which often appear more saturated than expected after printing when you choose the matte finish.

How long does a UV print last?

With proper care (hand washing, no abrasives), a UV print on stainless steel can stay sharp and vivid for many years. The print is bonded to the material at a molecular level, so it doesn't peel or flake; gradual wear only appears after a long period of daily use.

Is the print area limited on the bottle?

Yes, the print zone is defined by the bottle's shape — typically the cylindrical body, not the curved shoulders or base. Our bottle designer shows the exact printable area as you place your artwork, so you can preview the result before ordering.
